'Gun Free' Zones Not Safe

Fox News has published John Lott Jr's Gun-Free Zones Are Not Safe. In it, he postulates that one cause of multiple shootings is the proliferation of so-called "gun-free" zones in our society. No one wants to be next to a gun in study-hall - until it is needed.

Possession of firearms is the last-ditch effort to stop an attack by a determined assailant. Look at Lott's examples and ask your self: "What could we have done to prevent the carnage?" "If that had been my kid at Virginia Tech/New Life Church/wherever, and that particular scene played out, what would I want to happen?" "Should my kid cower for his/her life, surrender sweetly to the derangement of the murder or fight back." Now answer this question, fight back with what?

Let's get over something.

When we discuss concealed carry of a weapon or handgun, we're not discussing 16 year old boys that still play shootem-up with paint ball guns. Federal law already restricts handgun possession to those over 21. Those over 18 can possess long arms. Under 18, they're required to be under adult supervision. So much for the "Li'l Johnny's got a gun!" fear-mongering. Besides, we let a 16-year-old drive massive deadly weapons called cars!

"Gun-free" simply means this:

  • The law-abiding citizen is disarmed in the face of oppression.
  • The unlawful "citizen", AKA criminal oppressor, is not disarmed.
  • Where is the justice in that?
  • The perpetrators of "gun-free" zones blow smoke up our a__ when they try to tell us "The signs will protect us" and such BS. Read my lips: Criminals do not obey signs.
  • Generally there are not enough, if any, armed security guards. The perpetrators might be sued if a rent-a-cop injures a customer or serf (employee). In addition, they might have to spend some money.
  • Their vaunted "security" camera monitors are frequently unmanned.
Personal observation: In a large corporate building in Houston, one security guard monitoring a half-dozen monitors. Then he had to go to the bathroom. No relief. No "security".

I no longer recall the date or city, but it actually made the US national news when a kindergarten/elementary school was attacked by a knife-wielding individual in "gun-free" Japan. EIGHT children and adults were slashed before the staff could bodily overwhelm the individual. How tragic their culture, and ours, frowns on using effective self-defense tools.

Now, if that Japanese incident had happened here in Texas, I do not think the result would have changed materially. Just as in Japan, there are supposed to be "no guns" in schools and such.

Maybe, more later. Maybe not. :>)

God Bless Ya'll !
