Press ONE for English

H/T: Correspondent BobL

Bob, a long-time friend and mentor sent this link in one of his recent emails. Listen to Ron and Kay Rivoli as the Rivoli Revue speak to your heart and politics.

Teddy Rooselvelt, quoted in the video, said several times, several ways, that coming to America was a privilege. Our doors are open. Do not come here to make us in your image. Come here that Ameica may make you into an AMERICAN. If you don't want to be an American, go somewhere else.

Try this out for size:

In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American.

There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.

Teddy Roosevelt - 1907

When I got to pokin' around the YouTube site, I found much more of their stuff that spoke to my heart.

Church Music

Here's my $ 0.02-worth on a subject I know absolutely nothing about. That never stopped me before!

Church music. I've been in a number of different types of congregations over the years. Solid, conventional, southern protestant, charismatic, Pentecostal (there is a difference - somewhere), high-church (more or less), low-church and so-on. God seems to lead us into these places for our instruction. I don't know that we (well, I) contribute much to the congregation in return. Other than headaches and . . .

Anyway, now that I have some "experience" behind me, I am beginning to believe some of what is presented to us to sing, as a congregation, is just un-singable. Perhaps it is my/our inexperience, ignorance of the music or whatever. Perhaps it is a result of the choices made by our leaders. Whatever, I just do not know the songs - and I don't think most of the rest of us do, either.

Not too long ago we visited a congregation that employs a kind of "praise band" and an organist and choir.

It was there that I noticed significant portions of the congregation were not singing. Some were silent on when the praise band was used. Some were silent when the organ and choir were employed. In fact, during one song, the choir did not seem to know the song and hardly any of the congregation seemed to participate.

I am beginning to believe that our congregation has been experiencing much the same difficulty. While I personally prefer the "low-church" approach to worship, I do appreciate a dose of "high-church" music. I can exist in the middle, 'tween folk, praise and worship, hymn and anthem.

However, it seems to me that much of the music, particularly on the hymn and anthem end of the spectrum is quite unfamiliar to me. That may be just my ignorance. On the other hand, I don't think I get to hear the same unfamiliar songs enough to learn them.

Anyone else experience this? Or is it just me? :>)

When I read this title, "Tom's Hardware's Biggest CPU Shoot-Out, Ever", I got all excited. The Appleseed Project

H/T: Midland Agrarian

Thanks to Richard at the Midland Agrarian, I'm able to introduce you to something I think may have great value for you. It's the Appleseed Project. I am not a participant and, frankly, may never be able to be one. But that doesn't mean I can't promote it. I've been reading about it on the 'net for a while and wishing/fantasizing about shooting it. Health doesn't permit it for the foreseeable future. But, here goes nothing.

The Appleseed Project is sponsored by Revolutionary War Veterans Association. The embedded video shows a Shoot that looks like a LOT of fun! Safety and Education are heavily stressed according to everything I've been able to read.

Check it out and let us know what you find!

Can Gun Control Reduce Violence?

H/T: The War on Guns

Check out this old article, Can Gun Control Reduce Violence?, from WOG. It is thought-provoking and provides much fuel for discussion - especially with the willfully ignorant!

It's subtitled:

Commonsense Logic & Ethics for Evaluating Policy Options

Cases in Point: Restricted Purchases & Permissive Carry Laws
What Do We Know? What Do We Need to Know?

I think you'll find it quite useful.

Liberal Anger, Part II.

H/T: Keep And Bear Arms

Here's the second part of yesterday's post on Liberal Anger and other, assorted, mental health issues impacting the politics of control.

Part I is here: Liberal Anger, broken homes and gun control.

From today's lesson:

Understandable or not, the pain of the survivors and of those who may sympathize with them punishes the innocent of today and of tomorrow and it does it in anger.

Go read them both. Makes sense, doesn't it?

John Longenecker writes a thoughtful piece concerning the foundational issues of the gun-control, elitist, socialist movement. It's not about guns. It's about CONTROL!

As a further example, there this David Codrea piece at: Don't forget the DDTC/ITAR threat to guns. You knew about it, right?

Would Christ Carry a Concealed Weapon?

H/T: Town Hall

Once in awhile, I hear someone say "Jesus wouldn't do THAT!", or whatever. If addressed to me, considering my big mouth, it's usually in reference to use of deadly force or carrying a concealed weapon or related subject.

About three years ago we were involved in a similar "discussion" amongst two long-time friends and leaders in our congregation and our pastor. When each of us learned that the other side would not, could not, "give" SWMBO! and I left that church.

Five people, four positions:

  1. "I'm afraid of guns!" I believed her from the git-go. It has never been her nature to be anything other than a straight-shooter.
  2. "Whatever she says."
  3. "I prefer to not have them around" and, drum roll please, . . .
  4. "I will carry wherever and whenever I may legally do so."

They're solid, strong Christian individuals who can not see the danger their beliefs place upon the congregation they led. May they walk in His Peace.

With that in mind, I found this Doug Giles article somewhere on the 'net about a year ago. I think it is still important.

Read it and let's discuss it.

When discussing what Christ would do in a given situation, it’s usually good to actually go to the gospels, read them and then draw conclusions. Here’s what I’ve gotten after scouring Scripture a few times:

1. Jesus in His earthly ministry didn’t carry a weapon except . . .

2. It’s clear from Scripture that Jesus didn’t need weapons because He had . . . .

I, too, believe that God supernaturally protects me, to some degree, because I should have been dead a long time ago. However, should my guardian angel be napping or busy doing something else other than trying to keep up with me, I’ll be okay, because Smith & Wesson art with me as well.

3. Lastly, in Luke 22:36-38 Christ told his disciples

Jesus told them—didn’t ask or mildly suggest—but told His buddies to . . .

Jesus didn’t tell them to carry a whistle, a shofar horn, or a bag of sand to blow in bad guys’ eyes, but a . . . .

Now, in a 21st century WWJD context, even though He didn’t personally carry a weapon, what do you think He thinks about His followers defending themselves with deadly force, huh, pacifists?"

The Unintended Consequences of Despotism.

H/T: Qu Dao Fah by way of The War On Guns

David Codrea has recently introduced his readers to Qi Ji Guang of Qu Dao Fah.

[D]espotic regimes such as the Third Reich and Stalin's brutal Communist empire utilized civilian disarmament at a profound rate. Only after the guns were confiscated, could these brutal dictators begin the great purges, the massacres of millions, and the incarceration of any political dissidents into the worst hellholes on Earth, whether it be a death camp or a Gulag.

However, within any population, there is a certain percentage of people who WILL NOT BACK DOWN TO ANY FORMS OF TYRANNY. These people will NOT allow their freedom and liberty to be taken away. These people WILL NOT surrender their children to the mercy of the collectivist killing machine.

Phil Elmore's comments hit the socialist "nail" on the head:

No, liberals reserve for their staunchest contempt the ownership of firearms by American citizens. They pour their derision and their outrage on the right to self-defense guaranteed you by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Guns have no effect upon crime, but they do make all men equal, as the saying goes.

Also significantly, the average gun-hating liberal lives his life in ignorance. Leftist gun-grabbers possess almost no knowledge concerning the realities of the technology they so hate and fear.

ABC, for example, produced the "20/20" piece "If I Only Had a Gun," the purpose of which is to establish, quite falsely, that firearms are next to useless for self-defense and that having a gun, well, simply won't help you if someone else has a gun.

A working knowledge of firearms technology and its application quickly dispels, utterly and with finality, all of this myth and misinformation.

Firearms technology and the Second Amendment are the linchpin holding our Constitution together. If we remove either out of fear or ignorance, everything falls apart.

Don't Tell Me - Show Me!

H/T: USCCA Email 4/22/09

Here's a thought I "stole" from Tim Schmidt's quote of someone on their forum:
"I gave up explaining why I have a semi-auto rifle (or handgun) a long time ago.

I open my calendar, extract a business card and suggest we make a date. I state "I'll show you. I'll even let you try it for yourself". About 70% of the time it works and the offer is accepted.

On the date I bring extra hearing and eye protection, targets, ammo and a couple guns. I give a friendly briefing on gun safety, range safety and range procedures. I offer to let them go first--stating emphatically that "it doesn't hurt".

After a few rounds I usually see a big smile.

I tell them to "let 'er rip", "go ahead, shoot it FAST". Most do; the smile becomes a wild-eyed, ear to ear grin and often a verbal expression like "Oh, Yeah!!!" escapes, uncontrollably from their lips. Occasionally there is a squeal- something like "these are fun!"

I just figure it's more effective to show somebody than to climb up on the 2nd Amendment soapbox and pontificate..."

An excellent idea. Let's replicate it in our dealings with the uninformed and antis. For the record: I am a "suspect" as far as USCCA is concerned. I'm on USCCA's emailing list - voluntarily! I am not a member - yet.

TX - Shooting Fellowship

If you have been reading this blog for more than ten minutes, you'll realise that I'm jealous of Warren (see previous post). I wish had thought this up!

OTOH, *I*would do it "better"! Just kiddin', Warren! (It's much easier to "improve" an idea than to originate it!)

My idea is to start up an informal IDPA/IPSC-like group in the North Houston, Spring, Tomball area to do the following:

  1. Provide Christian fellowship around a practical skill-building hobby
  2. Introduce men and women (over the age of 21?) to the practical shooting skills not taught in the Texas Concealed Handgun License qualifying course. Persons younger than 21 may be considered on a csae-by-case basis.
  3. Use IDPA or IPSC rules to form the structure and safety rules for the group
  4. This would be held in the North Houston, Spring, Tomball, southern Montgomery County, Conroe area of SE Texas. There are at least two indoor ranges that I am aware of in this vicinity. (Indoor ranges help me to survive allergy season - 365 days/yr)

What do you local guys and gals think? Any interest? Or should I go back to sleep? ;>)

MS - Food for Thought - Mens Shooting Fellowship

First of all:

A new correspondent, Warren Mueller of Pass Christian, MS wrote to me the following. I quote:
If you would like to write a post that would be great. I believe men's fellowship groups have to be about three things: fun, fellowship/spiritual growth, and service to the church and community.

For the fun part I was thinking of pulling in the target shooting as a sport idea. I have a theory that many/most men have a fascination with guns even if they have never held or shot one. It just taps something deep inside from our old hunter/provider days that modern culture hasn't yet stamped out of us.

We have a nice indoor range about 30 miles away that I shoot handguns at and then there is an outdoor pistol, rifle, skeet/sporting clays range about 60 miles away. We had two police ranges real close by but for some reason the FBI won't let the public on them anymore (even the police can't/won't anwser (sic) the obvious question of "why").

So, if anyone has tried this or something similar to it, I am interested in hearing about it. Thanks for all your links, most of them I have not seen before.

Remembering Columbine

H/T: Bayou Renaissance Man

Along about this time of year, we commemorate several anniversaries:

Sorted in the order I consider important, these are just the ones I can remember off-hand.

Then, Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man reminded us of the lessons to be learned from Columbine and such.
There are all sorts of commemorative articles, programs and news items popping up about this event. I don't propose to quote them here: those interested may find them with a quick Internet search. However, I'd like to reflect on the most important lesson of Columbine - one that's been tragically repeated in many school shootings since then.

That lesson is simply this: if you disarm those at risk of such attacks, you make them victims. You hand them to their killers on a plate.

Terrorists and mass murderers are cowards. They prefer targets that don't shoot back.

Here in the US, people still wring their hands, blame the instrument (the gun) instead of the perpetrator, and are blind to reality. Result: we go on having school shootings.

I repeat: to disarm those at risk of attack is to render them nothing more than helpless victims. That's the true lesson of Columbine.

(Emphasis included in the original - Gene)

Our would-be leaders want to disarm We the People of our ability to respond to attacks. In fact, it is not from the attacks of criminals that they want to disarm us. They want us defenseless when they, the would-be leaders, come for us. They're like the slavers of old: Defenseless victims mean more profits for them. "Terrorists and mass murderers are cowards. They prefer targets that don't shoot back."

ABC Ignores Evidence Guns Useful in Confronting Criminals

H/T: Keep And Bear Arms

ABC aired their smear of concealed carry of a firearm piece, "If I Only Had a Gun", Friday night while we were in Church. It was Good Friday, after all. Well, we still got the message ABC didn't want the Christians to hear: We recorded the show. Aren't DVRs great?! hehe

The spots aired before the show were suspicious. Of course, one doesn't look to ABC, much less Dianne Sawyer, for truthful or straight reporting. Even the spots were very biased!

Sawyer informed viewers: "Our training is already more than almost half the states in the country require to carry a concealed weapon."

That wasn't training. What they got was a tiny bit of eduction - barely sufficient to pass a state concealed handgun test - maybe.

You and I passed our state drivers license test. We were not trained by the state. Someone else did the training. See the difference? Qualifying for a license is not to be considered training. In fact, a license is normally considered a license to learn.

Anyway, you noticed their "average Joes" weren't concealed handgun licensees? None of them. They appeared to be universally young and terribly ignorant of the subject of responsible gun handling. Even their so-called "expert" who claimed to us Air-Soft pistols extensively.

Why do I have my hackles up over this fluff-piece? For one thing, it promotes a lie. A pervasive lie that supports an agenda of disarmament and enslavement of the population to the ruling criminal element.

ABC did the US a disservice in airing this piece. They did not tell the whole story.

Anti-gun laws favor criminals

H/T: WorldNetDaily

I recommend Mychal Massie's thoughts to you. He puts things in a rather straight-forward manner. Better than I.

It is easy for the anti-Second Amendment groups to blame conservative commentators for being responsible for these killings based on their support of private gun ownership – but that is a crude banausic idiocy based on agenda-driven contempt for any and all who disagree with their agendas.

And to that point, how many anti-firearm groups contribute to funds set up to help the families of slain officers? How many funerals of slain officers have Susan Sarandon, Rosie O'Donnell, Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton attended?

Tell me how passing more restrictive laws and/or taking guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens would have prevented the murders of these officers.

[Legislators and anti-gun groups] are not the solution to gun crimes – they are part of the problem.

Obama: Islam Has Shaped the U.S.A. !!?????

H/T: Transfigurations

Back on April 8th Pat Dague, of the Tranfigurations blog, linked to an article by Robert Spencer in FrontPage Magazine concerning Pres. Obamessiah and his adoration of all things Muslim.
“We will convey,” said Barack Obama to the Turkish Parliament Monday, “our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over the centuries to shape the world — including in my own country.
[Emphasis Added - Gene]
Spencer goes on to add:
So in what way has the Islamic faith shaped Obama’s country? The most significant event connected to the Islamic faith that has shaped the character of the United States was the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
Just think, O' has discovered a new source of American history! We weren't taught about the Moslem contributions to American society back in the '50s & '60s! [That is the Nineteen Fifties and Nineteen Sixties to you young'uns!]

'Way back in the pre-Cambrian Age, we were taught about the Barbary Pirates and Tommy Jefferson's war on them. That included an early blooding of the US Marine Corps and the US Navy "projecting power" on the high seas.

If you don't remember, two hundred years ago pirates from Mosletm nations raided the shipping in the Mediteranean Sea [and anywhere else they chose to go] to take ships, loot and crew. The latter were held for ransom or slaves. Prior to T. Jefferson's presidency the US, and other nations, paid the ransoms. With Mr. Jefferson the buck stopped. Dead.

There really is nothing new under the sun.

A "Twit" of a Church

This one's just for fun!

Just tryin' to lighten your load a bit!

Twitter Church

LONG BEACH, CA - Rev. Daniel Vickers moved to California from Arkansas three years ago. His desire was to plant a church that would reach out to the vast lost population in Southern Cal. Despite his best attempts, Vickers struggled to get anyone to join his church. About six months ago, he realized that he needed to meet the population right where they are.

According to Vickers, "When I moved here, I tried to get people to come to a specific location for church. Nobody wanted to do it. I never even had a chance to do any expository preaching or singing Just As I Am. No one at all wanted to actually come to any sort of gathering. That's when I realized that I needed to contextualize to meet people where they are."

"I needed a new idea. That's when that Facebook guy inspired me."

Vickers dropped actually talking to people and began watching. He quickly found out that people in Long Beach basically don't talk face-to-face to one another anymore. A few use cell phones to talk, but the majority text all the time. In light of this, Vickers decided to plant what he believes to be the first Twitter Church.

Legal U.S. Arms Exports May Be Source of Narco Syndicates Rising Firepower

H/T: Keep And Bear Arms

Now that Clinton the 2nd (Billy-boy was Clinton the 1st) has told everyone that Mexico's arms problem is our problem, maybe she will own up to the true facts. Our own government (yes, Bush and BHO) are selling our military arms to the Mexicans. Either the Mexican government can't control their own military (why should we not be surprised?) or our government is selling to the cartels! Perhaps indirectly, but still, our government is providing the weapons to the "bad actors" on the southern side of the border.

Now that the truth may be sneaking out from under the cloud of lies and deceptions, we must ask, why is that same government blaming the legal arms dealers of our country?

I believe it is because the government in general, and the elite in particular, can not stand the thought of viable opposition from the peons. BTW, to our Dear Leaders, the peons are US.

But the drug war in Mexico is not being fought with Saturday night specials, hobby rifles and hunting shotguns. The drug trafficking organizations are now in possession of high-powered munitions in vast quantities that can’t be explained by the gun-show loophole.

So where are these military-grade weapons really coming from?

Rather than address that valid question head on, the mainstream media, and now even the Obama administration, have been attempting to paint lipstick on the pig, trumpeting, in the words of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the “courageous efforts undertaken by [Mexican] President Calderon.”

Zimbabwe in America's Future?

Alan Keyes takes no prisoners in yesterday's post. He correctly, IMNSHO, "tells it like it is". In other words, he calls a "spade a spade".

Unfortunately, this time the "spade" is our spade.
From ancient times (see for example Book VIII of Plato's Republic) pure democracy has been identified as perhaps the most unstable form of government. It's like a radioactive element with a short half-life fated to break down speedily into its next form. Under the influence of demagogues pure democracy declines to mob rule which feeds such a collapse of order and security that people literally beg for the iron hand of tyranny to rescue them from calamity.

Can we see his politically motivated orgy of debt financed spending as the demagogue's destructive disregard for the real well being of the nation? Can we see in his bid for dictatorial control of the economic sector preparation for the disastrous subordination of economic sense to political ambition? Though he is not alone in doing so (his sold-out Democrat and Republican colleagues share in his actions) will his calculated acts of "creative destruction" turn the once flourishing strength of the American people into a wrecked and timorous shadow of its former self?

Any more bright ideas from our elected elite?
