What If?

A while back I got interested in alternative fiction.  It was something I had been introduced to as a mere youth by Sprague de Camp and others and then forgotten.

First, Eric Flint captured my attention with his 1632 and other stories.  More of late I've been reading some from Harry Turtledove.  All interesting stuff, if you like that kind of fiction.  Right now, I do.

However, I did find that Turtledove has published children's fiction, stacked right-smack-dab in the middle of the adult fiction at my local library.

I picked up one of his Crosstime Traffic books and found interesting if not a bit biased toward a younger mind set.  Oh well.  It was fun.

So, earlier this week I picked up, deliberately, another one.  The Gladiator:  A Novel of Crosstime Traffic.  Here, Turtledove asks:  What if the SOVIETS had won the cold war?

Ouch. It's made me think both about the what-if questions AND the what-now questions we face in this, all-to-real, time line.

Such things as the control of media, the double-speak of our "elite" class and the "elite" wannabes" makes me think we ought to be changing our thinking.

What do YOU think?

God Bless Ya'll !
